Bridget Collins' novel is incredible. Set in an ahistorical past, the narrative follows Emmett as he is called to leave his family and work for the (reputedly magical) bookbinder. Binding, and the books themselves, are something more powerful than they are today. As Emmett learns his trade, he learns just what a book can do. Collins sets up her readers with expectations that are subverted over and over again. She explores, with real authorial skill, the power of memory and how we construct our ideas of a self, identity and truth. Like Once Upon A River, this is a tale preoccupied with what makes a family. Like The Night Circus, it creates an immersive world of mystery and magic. Thank you to Harper Insider for my review copy. I really love this book the Cover is beautiful and all of the attention to detail I have read this book more times than I can count once I read it I can’t put it down it is the best book I have ever read l love it so much.

This is an incredibly well written book, with an amazing story that held me in its grasp and would not let go until I had finished. Haunting, moving, thoughtful. I found the story to be engaging from the start and many points in the book had me gasping and shouting out loud! This one is not to be missed. If you like a non traditional love story with well written characters and a lush world then this is for you!
