Reviews: The Beetle (2)
“A dark element to this tale”
(Paperback)
This book is dark inside and out I love the depth of imagination, I think it better than Jane Austen novel sense and sensibility in my opinion because there’s a lot more to the story than meets the eye even if you don’t think it it will make your skin crawl just like an insect or a beetle invading our humans personal space!
“Nicely disturbing...”
(Paperback)
The book is structured in four unequal parts - each one being a different first person narrative. I found the first part tedious but then I do not like, generally first person narratives, and I struggled on...
I was glad I did so!
This is a well crafted and executed horror from 1897. Marsh handles his various 'narrators' very well and the story is suitably atmospheric and alive that it is brought vividly to you.
As I did not engage with the first narrator I found the last one slightly confusing and had I been asked for my (humble) opinion I would have advised that another character was not necessary - but it rolls on gathering pace until the conclusion, which is satisfying.
A good solid piece of victoriana...
