As a first novel in the series it introduces Harry Holy (as the Aussies call him!) and explains a great deal about his past. It paints the picture of a man constantly punishing himself for his past failings. Which, ironically, makes for a better copper in the latter books. As to the story itself, well, it is very good with plenty of twists and turns, some wonderful characters - Otto, Andrew and Yong Sue are particularly good fun - and has some great action set pieces. The final showdown is especially good. The bad guy of the piece turns out to be something of a surprise and is a decidedly twisted individual (as all true psychopaths are!). One of the things I found interesting was the discussion regarding alcoholism and drug addiction, profound eye-opening stuff indeed. Against the backdrop of Harry's past his particular 'poison' would appear to be self-recrimination rather than Whiskey. Another was the Aboriginal history and the traditional stories. I found myself immersed in these sections and wanting more. A good start to the series, then, and certainly worth reading.

Nice to know where Harry came from in terms of his wanton appetite for self destruction but a weak ending and not in the same league as 'The Redbreast' or 'The Snowman'.

After reading 'the snowman' which was exceptional I was really disappointed with this book. Slow to start and finish. It does go into some detail to introduce Harry Hole but even this becomes boring at times. Only in places does it become exciting, I got close to the end but felt I had already predicted what would happen.
