“The contradiction of plenty and loss”
(Paperback)
My brother and I talked about this book. It’s disconcerting. Mark Blackburn clearly was born into the one percenters, wealthier than anyone we’ve ever met or can even imagine. But what comes through clearly was how miserable he actually was, from a school where he gets beaten up, to a father who’s a bully and a liar and a cheat. Mark Blackburn experienced both sides of the same coin. This must have been confusing for him - because it certainly was for us - to be given so much and yet so little simultaneously, to have access to so many opportunities, yet to be so emotionally crippled you cant take advantage of them. It’s really hard to understand. It seems as if Mark Blackburn spent his life sorting out this contradiction. This book provokes discussion and greater awareness and sympathy of other people’s lives.
Everybody knows why Donald Trump promised this, it’s because our political elite are corrupt. They’ve got their claws deep into governing. As a result, American democracy does not function. Term limits is what the Founding Fathers would have wanted. It is healthy for the American democracy, and will revitalise the nation, and if you don’t believe me, read this novel.
