Reviews: Tank (1)
“Outstanding !”

I loved this book. The book covers 10 iconic tanks, from the Mark4 to Abrams tank, to explain what made each one so successful and the myriad political, technical, tactical and other factors involved in producing tanks. This all leads to a wide ranging, chronological and orderly discussion of the development of the tank over time. The book is not too simplistic and never gets overly technical or “spotterish”. Tank enthusiasts will pick up on the background as to how and why specific tanks came about as a result of dedicated individuals, perceived national threat or radical approaches to design. General history fans will appreciate how technology, economics, the Cold War, ergonomics and other issues bleed together in creating expensive and lethal machines. The book is crisply written and well ordered. There is an insightful summary as to the future and basis of tanks at the end. As a mark of the authors’ insight, the book constantly reinforces how technology has threatened the tank but how tanks have come to incorporate that same technology. The book flows and is very compelling. I think that tank / military enthusiasts as well as general / modern history buffs will really enjoy this insightful and fascinating book.
