Reviews: Surrender (5)
“Gorgeous”
(Paperback)
What a beautiful way to fall in love with your next favourite singer! Each chapter is thought out so perfectly, and relates really well to the chosen chapter title songs. There is fact, there is emotion, there is logic. Flows beautifully, chronologically from Bono's childhood, to his parents, to his wife Ali, and his band mates, to his most current times mingling in politics and charity etc.A perfect read for anyone who wants a true insight into all the highs and lows that lead to U2's amazing lead vocalist.and Definitly perfect for anyone like myself who is younger and only judt getting into the band! Amazing!
“Surrender!! Resistance is Futile!!!”
(Hardback)
They say if you remember the 80s & 90s you weren't actually there. Well I was there, and I remember U2 being mega! Along with Huey Lewis and Bon Jovi, they pretty much invented the 'lighters aloft' stadium anthem. Along with Robbie Williams. So I was literally "stuck in a moment I can't get out of" (one for the fans) when I got to feast my eyes on this "story of one pilgrim’s lack of progress… With a fair amount of fun along the way". That quote pretty much sums up Bono. Just when you think he's about to be all pompous he says something light-hearted to remind you how down to earth he is. Genius. Luv finding out what inspires him and makes him tick, and why it makes him tick and inspires him. My kids say it's "boring old fart" music, but what do they know? All their music sounds the same and I'm always telling them to turn it down and listen to some REAL music. U2 showed you don't have to be good looking to be rock stars. If you've got good tunes you can just cover your ugly bits with a hat or sunglasses. Also named after a US spy plane, so that's cool. Take note Gen Z, boomers are back and ready to rock!
“Amazing Read (and listen)”
(Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it was well thought out and written, with excellent illustrations by the author. I found it an extremely interesting read and would highly recommend it if you are a U2 fan or just want to find out more about the legend who is Bono. The audio book version is amazing too, superbly produced with music sound bytes from the Songs of Surrender re-workings. Bono's narration of his story is something else. It's a real shame that the audio book is only a download and the mooted lavish 8 CD edition was never released.
“Sanctimonious claptrap”
(Hardback)
I quite like U2 which is why I treated myself to this book. Sadly it is full of the most sanctimonious claptrap. For someone who can pen some beautiful lyrics this is absolute drivel. I hate giving up on a book but there was a real risk of me hurling it through a window if I'd had to read any more.
“Self indulgent!”
(Hardback)
This is a book I wish I'd not read! Bono and U2 provided a backdrop to the 80's for me and I was looking forward to reading this as they are one of my favourite bands. For a true U2 fan there will be nothing new to read in this memoir. For me, I learnt a little about his background but other than that there was an awful lot of name dropping with very little context. Meeting supermodels etc -and? so what? Mixing with stars would be expected .
Bono constantly tells us he has anger management issues but apart from an incident when he thumps a band member I don't think he suffers more than the general population.! Very little about his home life which if he wants to keep private fine but then why write this? In comparison to Bruce Springsteens' book who tells us the good, the bad and the ugly, this is lacking.
Whilst not surprisingly it's well written the time line is all over the place. One page he's talking about Gorbachev turning up on his doorstep with a doll for his daughter and next he's talking about being on a train to speak to President Zelensky in Ukraine. I could go on but I can' be bothered. A total ego trip !
