“An Explosive Finale!”
(Paperback)
Supernova is the third and final book in Marissa Meyer’s Renegades trilogy, and it’s definitely the best of the bunch. Secrets are revealed, hearts are broken (mine included), and it all leads up to an explosive finale which will have you on the edge of your seat.
I went into this trilogy having already read and loved Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series, so my expectations were pretty high. Although the Renegades trilogy is a little slower paced than the Lunar Chronicles, it has an excellent pay off and I’m really glad I stuck with it!
The characters are varied and lovable, with excellent superpowers. This isn’t your usual strong person, fire person, flying person etc. In this series we get people like Danna - who has the ability to transform into a swarm of butterflies - and Callum (my favourite) whose power is to fill people with awe and wonder, to consider possibilities where they never have before - and that's just two examples. The leads, Nova and Adrian, are a joy to read. Nova Artino is the villain Nightmare, while Adrian Everhart is the hero Sentinel. The trilogy does a great job of showing how their opposing world views conflict, without portraying either as being definitely correct or definitely wrong. They are also allowed to think for themselves. They don’t entirely agree with the entrenched mindsets of their respective adult authority figures, and both sincerely wish for a better world.
The first two books in the trilogy lacked a certain sense of urgency in their pacing, and Supernova takes a little time to get going, but once the action really starts you won’t want to put the book down. I found myself getting annoyed every time something in real life interrupted my reading. The ending is absolutely beautiful and exciting, as all of the build up gets paid off in a major way. And then, just as an extra little present, the epilogue leaves you with a perfect little teaser of a plot twist.
Overall, I highly recommend this trilogy. It has excellent characters and a great premise, realistic clashes of ideology, and a very satisfying ending. The Renegades trilogy is perfect for fans of superheroes and cute but deadly romances.
