In STEM SMART Parenting, educators Alan Zollman, Lisa Hoffman, and Emily K. Suh aim to turn research on STEM learning into a practical guide for parents and caregivers. Rather than focusing on turning children into future scientists or engineers, the book makes the case for cultivating a STEM mindset as these skills are valuable regardless of a child’s eventual interests. The guidance is aimed at families with children from early years through to the teenage stage and emphasises everyday activities over expensive products. I found this to be a reassuring and approachable read. The authors focus on demystifying STEM and grounding it in daily family life, with plenty of no-cost or low-cost ideas that feel achievable rather than overwhelming. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on learning through mistakes and resisting “lawnmower parenting” in favour of allowing children to face challenges independently. I also liked their preference for hands-on, analogue experiences over screen-based ones as the latter is often what springs to mind when STEM is mentioned nowadays. That said, some sections felt more introductory than I expected and I would have welcomed a little more depth in some areas. However, the chapter summaries and takeaways make it easy to dip in and out, which will suit busy parents who don't have time to read it cover to cover. A recommended read for parents and caregivers interested in fostering curiosity, resilience, and critical thinking in children of all ages.
