Rounded up to 5 stars! I lived for this book for 4 days of a work week, I couldn’t wait to get back to the characters. SPOILER ALERT was a contemporary romance with heart and some heat. It focused on fandom and fan-fic life and this couple’s story was something that most readers would cheer for. April and Marcus met under unconventional circumstances, and for April it was an almost dream-like situation. I was completely on board and gripped from that moment. The chemistry between these two ended up being so believable because it took time to find its footing. Both Marcus and April had trust issues and I really enjoyed the foundations of those back stories, they were real and identifiable. I did struggle somewhat with the secret between them. When this book turned serious and the peak of the inevitable crash happened…the emotion was raw and dialogue was fantastic. I highlighted and highlighted because it just hit me in the gut and made me feel. "At long last, he was letting her see him without any barriers, any artifice, any deception between them." Basically, Marcus was my favourite character. He had such hidden depths and evolving character development, I couldn’t help but love him. April was his worthy opponent. If you want a fun, flirty story that turns out to run deep with feelings, then SPOILER ALERT is for you. It’s one of the best contemporary romances I’ve read this year. The Spoiler Alert is wonderful in so many ways - the dyslexic representation is on point! I'm dyslexic and I felt Marcus' pain, his struggle at times, the shame dyslexia can cause, how simple situations can become difficult. But at the same time he was clearly smart, passionate about Greek mythology, creative and good at his job. Dyslexic was one part of him, but it wasn't all he was. The body positivity was amazing, I loved that April was shown to be a confident plus-size woman but it didn't show her size through rose-tinted glasses. Olivia Dade did a fantastic job of showing how hard it is to live as a plus-size woman in today's society and all the ways fatphobia impacted April's life! April has trauma associated with her size, her relationships with her parents is difficult, past relationships have been hard. Just because she is now confident doesn't mean it hasn't been, and won't continue to be difficult. I liked that fanfiction wasn't demeaned, and in fact is celebrated by the characters as a source of community, a place of acceptance (mainly), a place where people can grow and find representation. I get the impression Olivia Dade has even been involved in fandom or researched it extensively. The romance between April and Marcus was real, genuine and beautiful. It didn't happen overnight, they faced challenges, had to communications problems and had to learn to trust each other. It was well-paced and I was kept gripped as I wanted to find out what happened! The only reason I've given this book four stars rather than five is at times Marcus felt too perfect - he was extremely empathic, immediately understood why April has trust issues, he had a whole speech about being their for past girlfriends while they were on their periods. He's gorgeous and his looks are important for his job but he isn't vain. He's always willing to apologise. The only 'flaw' he really has is his dyslexia (and that isn't a flaw IMO). It wasn't a huge issue but to me he felt unrealistic and more like a 'Prince Charming'. My other very minor niggle was I found it hard to believe Marcus was 40 and April was 36... They just didn't feel that old? Mature? I kept forgetting and imagining them as being in their late 20s to early 30s. It didn't massively detract from my enjoyment but I was also thrown when their ages were mentioned again.
