“Updating Gardening for a New Generation”
(Hardback)
I'm 19 years old and honestly, I haven't the slightest idea on what I'm doing when it comes to gardening. I spent HOURS with my grandad pottering around in his vegetable patch when I was younger, and I used to love pulling up the carrots and digging for potatoes, picking strawberries and oranges from the garden. When he passed, the knowledge went with him and nothing, other than the flowers my Gran tends, really grows in the garden anymore.
Last year I attempted to plant some peppers, strawberries and chilli's in Grandad's patch, but failed massively. It was really disappointing because i wanted so desperately to revive the old veggie patch and have a ready supply of fresh produce to make jam and chutneys with (I'm very keen on preserve making). Online, there is so much conflicting information on the time of year you should start sowing seeds and harvesting fruit, however SowHow makes it crystal clear on when to sow, when to harvest and how to make the most of your seed, from planting to eating.
The design is ridiculously slick and stylish whilst containing a great deal of simplistically laid out information , making it so accessible for novices like myself to grow veggies successfully. The book is split in to sections such as leaves, roots etc which makes it easy to navigate, and explanations of the different variations of types of veg gives this book the edge. I truly feel that this is the update that gardening needs, and if more young people knew about this, they may be able to harvest some of their grandparents/parents passion for growing and develop that passion in to their own. It really is a wonderful book!
