I was very fortunate to get hold of an advance copy of 'Small Steps' from a friend of one of the editors. The book chronicles the ups and downs, successes and failures of 11 completely different, small-scale community based projects collected from such far flung places as Bangladesh, Namibia and Central Scotland (in my home town as it happens!). It's not the kind of book I'd normally read, but it was a real eye-opener. Small steps they may be, but each project has big ambitions! Each chapter contains a detailed account of the project (written by those involved), illustrated with photos and diagrams throughout. Not only is each chapter written in an accessible, non-judgemental and entertaining way (from a personal perspective), but the attractive design of the whole book impressed me, too. I also liked the fact that all profits from the book will be donated to another worthwhile project, the education of women, especially in Africa. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! It left me wanting to read more about such projects - perhaps a second volume isn't too much to hope for?
