Reviews: Sky High (2)
“The Best Classic Crime Writer You probably Haven't Heard Of”
(Paperback)
Michael Gilbert is almost certainly my favourite discovery from the British Library Crime Classics series. He's witty, engaging, plots well, and makes you think he's a man with a history. he was a prisoner of war who escaped, and then a lawyer - both of these things feature in earlier books, so might he also have worked for the secret services? Myself and a customer who is a fellow fan both think he must have - his espionage stories are some of the best I've read. Sky High features and enjoyable cast of characters, some of whom I'd very much like to meet again and has all of Gilbert's characteristic humour. The mystery is a satisfying one and the ending genuinely tense.
“A Highly Enjoyable Read”
(Paperback)
A highly enjoyable read.Gilbert is one of the post-War generation of writers whose more modern writing style make their books somewhat more accessible to today's younger readers.A cast of largely likeable and more recognisable characters adds to the readability. The plot line eeks out clues, in a timely fashion, and all combined these elements come together to form an engaging and engrossing story that keeps you guessing right to the end.
