“A Wonderful Walk through History x”
(Hardback)
This book is a wonderful stroll through history and its lost places. Matthew takes us on a journey to eight lost places and tells us the history of each in an extraordinary way! Matthew gives us an account of each place and its social standing with interesting facts and off-road stories about wellsprings and what people thought of their curing properties! x I enjoyed that the eight places are spread across history and not clumped into one era. The pictures of each place add an element to the chapter and bring Matthew's entertaining narrative to the forefront! x
“A treat for all ages”
(Hardback)
This book is so rich in information, a total treat for anyone interested in the history of the British Isles. I found my jaw dropping on several occasions and it was a particularly poignant and close to home ending with the chapter on Capel Celyn, the flooded North Wales village. So informative and it feels like we journey with the author to visit these sites of national interest. Thank you for that.
“Lost spaces”
(Hardback)
This is a fascinating look at the villages we have lost in Britain, over the centuries. It’s a sad thought - a village being flooded for the need of a reservoir where it stood. All that goes to make up village life - homes, chapels and their acre of God’s space, just buried beneath an ocean of water. Others may have been lost due to natural disasters, some because of WWII. All of these examples stirred feelings of sorrow and loss in me, despite some being lost years or even centuries ago.
Despite the sadness of our lost spaces, this is a book very well worth reading. Very informative and enlightening.
“Inspiring”
(Hardback)
A beautifully written account of 8 forgotten and lost towns in Britain. Ranging from lost medieval villages that were pillaged by the plague to villages flooded in the 1950s to make a lake. Matthew green's writing is detailed and emotive. He inspires me to find the sites if these shadowlands for myself. Many thanks to the publishers for sending me a copy to review.
“Fascinating”
(Paperback)
This book was a wonderful exploration of lost places and their demise. Poignant and interesting. Green has a great way of explaining things that never feels heavy despite being incredibly informative.
