Reviews: Shadow Reaper (19)
“The twistiest plot”
(Paperback)
by Izzy
4.5 stars rounded upThank you to Lynette Noni and Penguin Random House for an eARC of this book on NetGalley. All opinions are my own.Woah this book was wild. The start of the book was on the slower side but it built up characters and world well, before shifting into a faster paced and twisty conclusion. I struggled to get into it a little at first but I should have trusted the process as once those twists came, they left me reeling. The magic system in this book is so unique and the glimpses we got through Kadmus’ (ancient celestial mage) journal entries were fascinating. Our main character Viri is a fierce 17 year old with a tragic backstory who has trained for years to become a Hunter of Shadow Reapers, fuelled by a desire for revenge. Then we have Reeve, a Shadow Reaper who has personal history with Viri (and is still completely obsessed with her). The tension and banter between the duo is fun, especially as their relationship starts to change as secrets are unveiled. Alongside Viri and Reeve, we have a whole host of side characters to keep things interesting. Honourable mention to Walnut the rabbit who is adorable and must be protected at all costs.Every time I thought I had the plot figured out and could see where it was going, I was proven wrong and forced to start guessing again with twist after twist. With that shock ending, I guess I’ll just be impatiently waiting for book 2!My fave tropes:- Found family- Friends to enemies to ?- Forced proximity

“Delicious fantasy!”
(Paperback)
by Lavinia, Waterstones
This is one of my anticipated reads of 2026 as The Prison Healer trilogy is one of my favourites. I loved Shadow Reaper. The setting felt like a breath of fresh air with its almost dystopian vibes, mages, reapers and alchemy. Viri and Reeve’s connection is brilliant, their conversations fast paced and full of wit and their history intriguing! The secondary characters add to their relationship, highlighting the light and dark aspects of the plot. Bring on book two!
“A good read, would recommend”
(Paperback)

This was a really refreshing and original fantasy read. The story grabs you right from the start and keeps you hooked with plenty of twists and turns all the way through to the final page. Just when you think you know what’s happening, it changes direction again. There’s a touch of romance, but the main focus is on the unfolding plot and the mystery behind it, which keeps you guessing throughout. The magical elements—mages, Reapers, and mysterious books—are woven cleverly into the story and all come together in a satisfying way at the end. It’s well written, easy to read, and feels different from a lot of typical fantasy novels. I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, especially if you're looking for something a bit unique.

Wow! I have just finished one of my top books of 2026 so far! This is my first read by Lynette and I have now bought all her others! You follow Viri who is a hunter of reapers as she becomes involved in a huge plot to destroy her city and unleash all the reapers! I found the concept unique and I loved Viri! It was full of twists and turns and the ending blew me away! I am impatiently awaiting book 2 already… all hail Lynette Noni!
“Shadow Reaper belongs at the top of your reading list”

Lynette Noni has once again committed the deeply personal crime of ruining my emotional stability. I would read this woman's grocery list. Her tax returns. The back of a cereal box if she wrote it. Because every single time… she delivers Much like The Prison Healer trilogy, Shadow Reaper grabbed me by the throat and refused to let go until the final page and then had the audacity to end with a twist so outrageous I spent the next hour staring at a wall reconsidering my life choices Lynette Noni remains the undisputed queen of foreshadowing. She leaves little clues everywhere, smiling politely while she sets the entire trap and then BAM the reveal hits and you're left frantically flipping back through chapters like a conspiracy theorist Aravelle feels alive from the very first page: dark, eerie, mysterious and packed with secrets lurking around every corner. Every chapter peels back another layer and every layer somehow makes things MORE unhinged Viri is an easy heroine to root for. She's stubborn, brave, fiercely loyal and determined to do what's right even when it would be significantly easier to make bad decisions. Which is unfortunate because Reeve exists. THE YEARNING. THE. YEARNING. Friends, I was not prepared The banter alone could have sustained me for weeks. Every interaction had me kicking my feet like a Victorian woman who just saw an ankle. The chemistry is ridiculous. The tension is ridiculous. My blood pressure was also ridiculous. Little Shadow And can we please discuss the fact that these two somehow manage to have a relationship that feels genuine and healthy despite all the trauma, secrets, magical chaos and emotional devastation happening around them? A rare and beautiful sight in fantasy romance The found family absolutely owns my heart. This chaotic little group shouldn't work but they fit together perfectly. I'd die for every single one of them. Even Walnut. Especially Walnut. In fact forget everyone else. Give the bunny the throne Every time I thought we'd reached the big twist, Lynette Noni would emerge from the shadows with another one like: "Oh, you thought we were done?" WE WERE NOT DONE One reveal after another after another until I was sitting there looking like I'd just witnessed a supernatural event. If you're looking for immersive fantasy, elite banter, found family, devastating yearning, emotional support rabbits and plot twists capable of launching a book directly across the room, Shadow Reaper belongs at the top of your reading list
