Reviews: Shadow Force (1)
“good military actioner”
(Paperback)
by Bretty
I have been critical of the two previous books in this series, they were far too obvious with gaping plot holes and a formula followed too easily from the first to the second book. I was pleasantly surprised to be shaken out of my lukewarm expectations to find this one is actually pretty good. The author has learnt from his previous books and is brave enough here to change the formula a bit. No caricature bad guys, no daft plot and lack of logic here, although we stay within the expectations of a high octane military thriller. The gang of mercenaries featured in the first two books return here, blackmailed into working for MI6 on a near suicidal black op to capture the leader of the Somali pirates. A new French Sea commando is added to the team as they train and then head for the Somali coast, not knowing there is another plan that will put them all at risk….. It is of course non stop action but some interesting twists are thrown in that raise it above the norm and away from the predictable. One or two mistakes from the previous books are repeated but the sum of the book out-weighs these mistakes and it ends up being exactly what you hoped for, non stop military action. Delighted to say I enjoyed it.
