Reviews: Shadow at the Morgue (1)
“Interesting Premise”
(Paperback)

4.25/5 stars As a fan of Devlin's Bow Street Duchess mystery series, I was excited to hear that she was beginning this new series. This is an interesting premise with a young woman who was horrifically orphaned as a young girl and raised by her uncle (a mortician) and aunt (who currently suffers from dementia). As this is set in Victorian London, Leonora Spencer is frustrated at only being able to assist her aging uncle rather than performing actual autopsies. Leonora's childhood friend, Jasper Reid, is a newly established Scotland Yard detective who has risen from the East End slums and a murky past that he must keep secret. When the morgue is burglarized while Leo is there, she wants to discover what was taken from a corpse and why. As she begins to work to assist Jasper (mostly without his permission) the two find that they complement the other's abilities and intelligence. I did enjoy this start to the Spencer & Reid mystery series, and while I did find it a bit slow at times, I do realize that it sometimes takes time for worlds to be built and everything to fall into place with the beginning of a new series. I look forward to following along with Leo and Jasper on their future adventures. My thanks to the author for the free early arc of Shadow at the Morgue for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
