Reviews: Sextant (1)
“A wonderful book”
(Paperback)
I purchased this book at full price as I had been urged by a relative to buy it for my son. My son owns a sextant and has sailed a yacht across the Pacific ocean so that made complete sense. I have never used a sextant or done an ocean voyage but got drawn into reading the book and the more I read the more I enjoyed it, so much so that I didn't want it to end. I think everyone can enjoy this book on some level, even if you cannot or don't want to understand the mechanics of astro-navigation, the story itself should entertain and enlighten you. A clever juxtaposition of the author's own voyage and the earlier exploratory voyages of Cook, Shackleton etc. makes for interesting and exciting reading. The details of some of the early Polynesian navigation techniques will undoubtedly cause you to smile. This book is as refreshing as the trade winds it describes and the story ebbs and flows as naturally as the sea it takes place on.
