Reviews: Selected Poems (1)
“Selected Poems”
(Paperback)
I read broadly, skimming over the details on occasion, and often do not go deeply into the life and works of a particular individual. In taking up Byron a few months ago I decided to do things a little differently and bought a selection of books on him. This version of his poems was my offering to his poetical works, and was a sizable foray on the subject. Lacking only Don Juan, which I subsequently bought, the selection offered a complete Childe Harold, whilst introducing me to lesser known works like his plays (not meant for public performance but more meditations on Byronic characters). Additional to the text are Byron's own notes which are helpfully included in the lower margin. Reading these will save you reading some biographies of him which draw heavily from them! Pleasure abounds in this libation to his fevered mind, whilst introducing to a more reflective and self-conscious Byron in the marginalia.
