Reviews: Reboot (3)
“a new beginning for football autobiographies?”
(Hardback)
If you're tired of predictable sports autobiographies, start with Reboot. I wasn't an Owen fan particularly although it's hard to not recognise his talent. I'm not even a particular fan of his punditry on television. BUT...this is a side of the man that I doubt many people know. There's honesty, straight-talk about both his career and the game in general. The newspaper headlines obviously selected selacious sections, but read as part of the whole story, it's difficult to disagree with Owen's take on almost every subject: money, club loyalty, injuries and more. Will he change Newcastle fans' minds? I doubt it and doubt he cares. But this is as laseringly honest as sports memoir as you'll likely read
“Refreshingly honest”
(Paperback)
A very readable and enjoyable account of not only his life but the behind the scenes of a career in football. The book calls for viewing life in a positive manner but Michael also admits to his shortcomings and the troubles of actually realising and understanding these character flaws. An open and to the point book from one of the premier league and England’s all time great and often forgotten about strikers.
“There was an iceberg on the radar that l hadn’t noticed”
(Hardback)
Let me be clear, this is a huge improvement on Michael’s previous book. Never understand why players write books during their careers.
It was a fair effort and there was decent stories to be told at all of the clubs he played for. It was a little bland and not as revealing as l was led to believe.
Along with different agendas and outlooks on the clubs he represented, he does open well on life with his bosses notably Benitez, Keegan, Shearer and Pulis. He does speak very warmly of Sir Alex Ferguson and portrays a side of Fergie that might surprise you!
