Received this as a Christmas present and finished within 3 days! An amazing book that I could not put down, I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone no matter the geek knowledge they have!

The story is fast paced and imaginative with great characters who you really love (or hate, there are the bad guys). 1980s references all the way, especially aimed at computer nerds of the 80s but plenty of music and TV references as well. I hadn't seen the film so there were no spoliers with the plot. Can't wait to get my hands on the sequel.

There is no other word to describe this but Legendary. As in the highest level of levels of epic and awesome gamer weapons. This book is incredibly detailed, loaded with references and lots of poignant themes including identity, friendship and freedom. Hard hitting stuff for what is essentially a book about 80’s pop culture. This is not one to be overlooked and I implore anyone with a brain cell to buy this, read this and level the hell up.

I watched, listened to, and absorbed a huge amount of 1980s culture through him, from films and music to games and general geek lore. Reading this felt like stepping back into those moments. It was like living through a childhood I never quite had firsthand, but always felt connected to. The references are not just clever or nostalgic, they are used with real affection and purpose, and they enhance the story rather than distract from it. The characters are easy to invest in and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. The protagonist is flawed, relatable, and easy to root for, while the supporting cast feels distinct and memorable. Their relationships develop naturally, and the emotional beats land just as well as the action. There is a strong sense of friendship and shared passion running through the story that gives it real heart. The world building is fantastic. It knows exactly what kind of story it wants to tell and commits to it fully. Ready Player One is a near-perfect geek adventure. With excellent pacing, memorable characters, and a world that feels alive, it is a five-star read that captures both the thrill of discovery and the warmth of shared cultural memory.

This is my favourite novel of all time! The first time I read it was in 2 7 hour intense reading frenzies. There is only one problem with this book: there no other book I've read since has been able to live up to it. Everything else just seems lacklustre and disappointing.
