“Do you ever feel like a book was written just for you?”
(Paperback)
What if you could play the game of your life and win a fortune? What if the world was watching, and competing alongside you? What if corporations greedy for that same fortune began to play dirty in order to succeed?
This book was pure joy to read. As a gamer it scratched every itch, packed full of little nods and references to old games and movies. Anyone with a fondness for the 1980's will love this book too, it could be described as a love letter to that decade, cline clearly loves the era.
While the references are a strength of the book, the story does stand up on its own as a twisting and exciting race to find digital treasure. Each chapter poses newer and greater threats to Wade as he gets closer and closer to reaching the end of the hunt, and his opponents react by hunting him down instead.
I know plenty of non-gamers who also loved this book, the tension never lets up and you'll find yourself ploughing through chapter after chapter, desperate to know what happens next
“A must read if you consider yourself even in the slightest bit geeky.”
(Paperback)
If you like 80's movies, music, have played video games and you're even the slightest bit cineliterate this is the perfect book. The wonderful moments when you're reading and you know the reference or you spot the Easter Eggs. You can tell it was written by a fan for fans and that isn't a criticism. The worst thing I can say about this book is that at points it's predictable, but in fairness, it does exactly what you want it to do and in this case that's not a bad thing.
“Absolutely loved it!”
(Paperback)
I read this book in two days, just couldn't put it down! Very well written and obviously very well researched by the author. I'm of an age that I remember well the music and vidoegame culture of the late 70's and 80's, although I never was, nor ever will be, a 'gamer', prefering books for my means of escape from the real world. However, the description of the game play in the book was so well done it almost made me want to give gaming a try! This book examines the contrast between the (miserable) real and (Utopian) on-line lives of people living in 2044. Their outlook in life is bleak and impoverished following the depletion of the worlds resources and subsequently most people spend their life logged in to an virtual reality world 'OASIS', in a effort to escape their misery. The creator of OASIS dies (Halliday) and leaves his billions to which ever gamer can find an Egg which he has hidden in somewhere in OASIS. The 'gunters' (egg-hunters) need to have an extremley in-depth knowledge of the pop/videogame culture in the 70's and 80's, and 'Ready Player One' details the quest for Halliday's Egg!
Read and enjoy!!
“We are Geeks”
(Paperback)
I bought ready player one for a geeky mate (who owns a collection of arcade and pinball machines) as a birthday present. The next day he gave me it back and told me I have to read it as it is amazing. He wasn't wrong.
This is filled with all the great stuff that we grew up with living in a seaside town...that is not much to do except lose yourself in some amazing arcades and console games. I did miss out on some of the games featured but that does not detract from the enjoyment of the book.
The book – like any good computer game – starts of slowly and easily, raising in pace and intensity until reaching a crescendo in the final pages.
If you liked this his new book 'Armada' is out on July 14th 2015. I can't wait....
“Absolutely amazing”
(Paperback)
I actually got this book in 2019 and finished it in a week! I have also read Ready Player Two and unlike others, I very much enjoyed it however I have just reread the first one and remembered how amazingly wonderful it was. It is just so amazing that it makes ready player two seem boring.
Every word is thought out perfectly and it is so good that there is not one sentence that bores me. There are so many twists and turns. I am quite young so i didn’t get many of the references however I still loved it and also found some new great songs.
I recommend this song to every single person on the planet! Go read Ready Player One!!!
