“A lovely picture book with an important message”
(Hardback)
When books arrive for me to read, they are usually accompanied by a press release but much less often there is a letter from the author with them that reveals their inspiration for their writing. These are always an interesting read and perhaps especially so in this instance where the writer’s main job is as a journalist and the main character’s evolution has been inspired by a mixture of the toy hedgehog that they always keep with them – a keepsake from home – and a lengthy hospital stay following being injured while reporting on the conflict in Ukraine.
Luckily for the hero in our story, he lives far away from any war zones in the cosy house he shares with his reporter father. As Dad leaves for work, not knowing yet what stories the day will bring, he reminds Hedgehog about the rules he must follow to keep him safe. When Hedgehog’s turn comes to head out, he wanders about enjoying his surroundings until he sees that Baby Owl has fallen out of a tree on the other side of the river and is terrible danger from a big scary bear. Not allowed to cross the river by himself and not allowed to talk to strangers, can Hedgehog find a way to help the little bird before it’s too late without breaking Dad’s all-important rules?
Everyone loves hedgehogs and here our protagonist is a delightful member of his species. Full of admiration for his father and his role in breaking the news to the public, Hedgehog is very conscious that there are those in the world who are the polar opposite of Dad and when faced with the challenge of helping the baby owl has to work out what course of action to take while avoiding putting himself in danger – a really important message for younger readers to take onboard.
Accompanying Benjamin Hall’s text are Martina Motzo’s lovely illustrations which are full of colour and movement and which bring Hedgehog’s story to life wonderfully well, making this a picture book that will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
