“Painful and beautiful memoryscapes”
(Paperback)
by Kirsty (Newton Mearns)
This has to be my top read this year. An utterly devastating novella that moves through a phantasmagoria of grief, violence, memory and forgiveness. Told in prose poetry that builds through terse conceits and images peppered with wandering mamoryscapes. It culminates in a final sequence that had me in tears on a busy train moving up Scotland's coast. The eponymous Quinn takes us on a journey through the unravelling mind of an incarcerated individual. He asks us to consider the role of rehabilitation and forgiveness in justice systems. He asks us to think - with great discomfort - about male violence. He dwells on intergenerational trauma. He makes us think about love. For readers of Cynan Jones, Anne Carson, Max Porter, Megan Hunter, Susanna Clarke and George Saunders.
