The first thing I noticed about this book is that it has no chapters. But somehow this doesn't matter because it's one long, continuous brilliant read. From her high-spirited childhood scrapes with sibling Tony to her meeting and marrying her husband and business partner, Alexander Plunkett-Greene and eventual globally renowned fashion empire, this autobiography is a fast-moving, almost non-stop high octane journey through Mary Quant's early life, from her Chelsea store Bazaar to multi-million pound outlets in the UK and USA and fame in France and the Netherlands. It brings to life the long hours, graft and sheer hard work involved in building and running a successful business, at times with little food or sleep, but also the rewards for success doing something you excel at and passionately care about. This book is compulsively readable, particularly if you're interested in or nostalgic for the 60s (I was a child at the time), and a strong belief in young people, along with vibrancy and humour shine through its pages. I rate it as a must-read.
