Reviews: Prague Spring (4)
“Brilliant and rewarding”
(Paperback)
by Demelza Curnow
This book is every bit as gripping as the rest of Mawer's output. It is as evocative of a period generally as it is of a critical moment in history and of the places that appear within the novel. The character-writing is nuanced - the reader is first introduced to characters as they see themselves, as we are presented with their perspective on what is happening around them. Layers are added as those characters are then perceived and judged by others. The result is to present people in their complexity: they have strengths, faults, and we are reminded of the fact that none of us might be seen by others as we see ourselves or would like to be seen. This humbling truth is set against an unfolding series of events and the tension quietly grows, drawing the reader into a subtle depiction of what it might be like to be trapped in a city in crisis. Ultimately, this novel encompasses both the grand international stage and the small concerns of individuals - small concerns that are overwhelming when you are that individual.
“Love in turbulent times....”
(Hardback)
by Emine at Bromley
Simon Mawer brings us to Prague in 1968 on the eve of the Soviet invasion of the city with a wonderful story of first love, idealism, hate, politics and betrayal. There is a perfect balance of gripping storyline which makes it a page turning historical thriller. At the same time, his sensual , dreamy and poetic storytelling takes your breath away. Enjoy reading it...
“A Good Read.”
(Hardback)
by Milton of Campsie Annie
Another good spy novel from Simon Mawer. Its 1968 and Oxford University students Ellie and James are backpacking around Europe. They find themselves in Prague having crossed the iron curtain, following musicians who had given them a lift. Very soon they are caught up in a city under siege by the Red Army and all is not what it seems. This book has it all - danger, love, spying, friendship, secret meetings, romance, adventure and history. Having been to Prague, I could relate to the various landmarks and bridges described. This was an easy, enjoyable book to read and I would recommend it.
“Disappointing read compared to critic reviews”
(Paperback)
by julie sallis
I found it difficult to believe in the characters and they did not pull me into their story. There was a high level of assumed knowledge of events at the time yet I purchased the book in the hope it would give me a greater insight into the atmosphere and danger of living through that time as well as a clearer outline of the politics involved. Having visited Prague a few times the city itself was described well in the book. Overall the whole book seemed to meander through without a clear purpose or ending. I persevered as I dont like putting a book down once I have started.
