Reviews: Please Don't Read The Footnotes Please (2)
“AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY OF RANDOMNESS AND SHARP HUMOUR”
(Paperback)
by A Rumble Review
PLEASE DON’T READ THE FOOTNOTES PLEASE, by Rob Walton A Rumble Review   If you are drawn to books that follow a straight line, where logic commands the next step, ‘Please Don’t Read the Footnotes Please’ might provide you with a challenge, but it’s a challenge you’ll be glad to have taken on. I admit, myself, to being permanently scarred by a too early in life reading of ‘Tristram Shandy’, which has led me to embrace order in books. However, Rob Walton’s seemingly madcap* romp through the town of Winterton, the deepest darkest forest, a sleepy little town, and other settings for his stories, is a riotous delight! In fact, the various threads that run through the book, suggest meticulous planning, and the stories hang together with what appears to be forward planning and a strong commitment to delivering a typo-free** manuscript. In the pages of this most excellent book, you will meet a girl who is hungry, a boy made of pillows, a boy who worries a lot, and other characters you might wonder at. Oh, and you’ll meet an unreliable narrator . . . possibly two. Alongside intriguing characters, you’ll find museums, horses, time capsules, chocolate and so much more. In truth, it is impossible to sum up ‘Please Don’t Read the Footnotes Please’ for review purposes, so you’ll just have to read it yourself!***   *Is madcap a word still in general usage, or am I showing my age? **Please refer to p73 for more on tyops. ***I’m aware that abrupt ending could be seen as rude, but that is not my intention.
