“Ambitious and well-crafted collection”
(Paperback)
An ambitious collection that looks at the effects of capitalism through the perspective of a factory worker. Though a new branch of Fitzcarraldo, their poetry series have established themselves with excellent taste. This is the third collection in the series I’ve read and Matthew Rice is as strong as I expected. The poems are pared back and controlled stylistically but deliver an emotional gut-punch in the carefully crafted images. Spanning the length of a night shift at the factory, we follow the speaker through the night and what they see, the people they work with, whilst also responding ekphrastically to other cultural media and influences. An incredible achievement. Thank you to the team at Fitzcarraldo for sending me a proof copy!
