Reviews: Philip's Italy Road Map (1)
“Too fragile”
(Hardback)
This map is reasonably clear to read. It is not the fault of the map-makers that the road numbering system is confusing. The same road changes its number when it crosses a border. The euroroute numbering does not help much, you have three numbers to consider when looking at roads close to a frontier.
This map was used for navigating in long car journeys. The real problem is that constant refolding was required to ensure that you could see the desired area without blinding or distracting the driver. Especially as it was a small convertible and frequent folding was necessary. The result was that the paper soon tore.
These maps should be produced on strong flexible paper such as used for envelopes. Old maps were cloth backed.
