Reviews: Perfume (9)
“Hard to describe, but loved it!”
(Paperback)
Perfume was such a unique book in that we follow a murderer with no sense of guilt or morality while he creates amazing perfumes with near supernatural skill. I actually love historical fiction, so the setting of 18th Century Paris and other French locales was enjoyable, and the imagery of the scents, sights, and feel of the dirty city and people were really well-done. This book about scent, something that I think can be hard to visualize, especially of an unfamiliar odor, was masterfully evocative of that sense; it was truly pleasurable simply to read those descriptions. This book is so hard to describe plot-wise, not for lack of plot but because the plot isn’t exactly what the book is about? If I were to describe the plot, you might want to read this, but this book is more about the experience of reading it than hearing a story. In the end, it was definitely five stars for me!
“A must buy!”
(Paperback)
Thrilling and gothic, this book is defiantly up there with Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Grey’.
It's got lovely descriptive language and really amusing characters that just keep the story going right to the finish.
It is a bit slow to begin with, and most of the action does only really start near the end, but it is so very worth it
“Odd but I liked it,quite visceral.”
(Paperback)
Did not know what to expect of this book, but it's very odd ,so it is right up my alley..
A baby is born in poverty, and he develops an insane gift of seeing the world through scent.
He resolves to create the greatest perfume that there ever was, and he smelt what the rich of Paris reeked off,was not impressed.Conned his way into a perfumery to create a perfume that reminded him of his 1st murder,a red headed pre pubescent girl.
He is obviously unhinged and eventually creates the perfect scent but at what cost to others.
Wild ride, a lot of descriptive passages which does show the world his mind inhabits.
“Weird & Wonderful”
(Paperback)
Although a little slow to start with, this is a brilliant story and gets more and more weird and twisted as it progresses. The descriptions of scenery and smells are fantastic and I felt like I was with Grenouille as he described things. I have never read a plot like this nor have I ever encountered a character like this, which makes this book so special and intriguing.
