Knox Taylor seems to have it all - a successful ice hockey career, a wife he loves, and three happy, healthy kids. With the off-season ahead and a well-earned vacation on the horizon, his life looks pretty perfect. That illusion is shattered though the moment he walks into his bedroom and catches his wife cheating with his brother-in-law. Months later, Knox is still trying to pick up the pieces of his life, returning each day to an empty house while his soon-to-be ex-wife desperately pushes for a reconciliation. To make matters worse, his parents and sister hold him responsible for the actions of his wife and brother-in-law and putting his sister’s marriage at risk, leaving Knox painted as the villain in a situation he never asked for. This is the bitter, angry version of Knox that Kylie encounters when she’s invited to a team get together meant to celebrate the start of the new season where he mistakenly assumes she’s just another puck bunny and treats her pretty badly, only to realise too late that he’s insulted the sister of one of his closest teammates. From there, the story unfolds into an entertaining romance with a strong frenemies-to-lovers dynamic. Knox and Kylie constantly clash whenever they cross paths, with Knox having a habit of saying exactly whatever comes to mind and behaving like a complete jerk on more than one occasion. Thankfully, Kylie is more than capable of standing her ground, giving as good as she gets, and their back-and-forth banter is wickedly delicious and often hilarious and with chemistry like theirs, it’s obvious where things are headed. Despite his reluctance to trust again, Knox slowly finds himself drawn to Kylie, especially as he sees how naturally she connects with his kids. Before long, he’s falling hard and fast. The problem is that Kylie carries her own emotional baggage after growing up with a mentally abusive stepfather who used love as a means of controlling his daughter leaving her firmly against commitment One of the standout moments of the book for me was definitely the way Kylie handles Knox’s ex-wife, it was incredibly satisfying to see her put firmly in her place. I only wish Kylie had taken the same approach with Knox’s family, who were far more sympathetic to the cheating spouses than to their own son, especially his mother. Overall, this was an engaging romance filled with fiery chemistry, sharp dialogue, and a couple who were more than capable of challenging each other at every turn making Only For Him a fantastic addition to what is turning out to be a great series.
