Reviews: One-Dimensional Man (1)
“Marxism is academic”
(Paperback)
by Michael Rothwell
275pp reveal an account on the conflict between capitalism and communism. Marcuse is a Marxist and here his critique is pointedly pro-left. Discussing the 'logic of domination' is such that theoretical philosophy tempers the outcomes of protest and revolution. Domination is something to fight against but is also a style of authority which is not always central to the life of a political country or place within this philosophy. Entertaining to read a text whose sublimation is that the proletariat will become the only class in a communist state. He looks at Bolshevism too but focuses on the positive elements in communism. Frankly October 1917 has left the building in terms of reproducing the act within or through our life-time. Stalin's death changed everything in the Union Soviet Socialist Republic into a social conformity which may have radicalised, post-Stalinism. Found really during the Prague Spring beginning in January 1968 and ending August 1968. The Czech protesters were forcibly stopped by Moscow, as seen in many iconic pictures. One-dimensional Man is a figure that has his character and identity shaped by powerful controls, such as television and film, work and capitalism. Education enables country's citizens the ability to purchase goods and to compare items in sales. Freedom of the intellect is something here that Marcuse writes about, underlying the philosophy of modern alienation in capitalist states. One-dimensional Man is, in essence, the basic prop of life in a life course set on one acceptable path. Buying, selling, lending, borrowing: transactions and investments. Marcuse looks at civilisation in the west and how it functions politically and militarily (such as states with nuclear weapons - the 'welfare and warfare state'.) His prediction is that the ending to change the status quo will result in death. A little like the protest in contemporary Iran. Marcuse wrote this book in 1964: much has come through. And still, the ruling ideology requires reform and repair. This somewhat obsolete critique can only be read as a text from 1964; its Marxism is academic, now.
