Reviews: Once Upon An Algorithm (4)
“Great characters and plenty of tension”
(Paperback)
by Shelagh Merlin
Wow! Once Upon An Algorithm kept me reading through the night. I just couldn’t stop no matter how tired I felt. This story stars two great characters in Leonie and Jack, but there was also a great supporting cast including Leonie’s entitled and utterly awful stepbrother Eric. I loved the enemies to lovers trope that played out between Leonie and Jack and the group chat messages Leonie received from her friends as the story unfolded. There was plenty of tension, both romantic and otherwise and enough plot twists to keep me guessing. I really loved this story.
“STEMinist romance”
(Paperback)
by Jennifer Charlton
I read an eARC of this book so thank you to the author, the publisher and Net Galley. I’m not normally a romance reader but I really enjoy STEMinist romance. I like that the characters have passions and careers outside of the romance and it’s interesting to read about different careers. This book certainly has a strong female protagonist with a rich life of close female friendships and a career they are passionate about. I also really liked that she was closer to forty and she felt really believable. A lot of the book is about work. The main character and the love interest both end up working at the same place on the same project. I liked that there was a story and a driver beyond the romance. I work in a similar role to the main character so I understood what was positioned but I did feel there was a lot of jargon. I wondered if this might be confusing or offputting for people who aren’t familiar with these tools/ processes I.e talking about Slack and Jira. I enjoyed this, I thought it was a good balance of the romance and the characters’ other passions and goals. I did feel the main character was manipulated by her step-brother too much to the point it was frustrating that she let it go on as long as she did, particularly where she could see it was harming others. The lack of communication felt self-destructive. Overall though an enjoyable read and I was really rooting for the main character!
“Fun rom com with loads of chemistry and ample angst!”
(Paperback)
by Micky C
An opposites attract rom com with ample angst and chemistry! Both of our main characters are carrying chips the size of the Grand Canyon on their shoulders and that makes it hard to see what is right in front of them. This book is also a grand example of how lack of communication and assumptions create massive havoc on relationships of all kinds. It was a fun read and even though I don't understand code speak or tech speak, I was able to follow along well enough to enjoy the read. If tech is your jam, you will probably enjoy the book even more than I did. Overall, it is a fun rom com with humor, angst, chemistry galore and lots of banter. Good friends make a supportive foundation for our intelligent and successful female lead, so it is a well-rounded story.
“Technical love”
(Paperback)
by Sj10
A romance that has more depth to it about their lives rather than just their love life. In fact this book may defer to the tech drama a little too much in that the tech speak and geek out on the roll out of this new app is probably a little on the heavy side unless you work or a are very familiar with the industry. Jack clearly has a huge chip on his shoulder about rich people and specifically rich women and plays into the relationship woes for him and Leonie. To be fair Leonie has her own baggage when it comes to money and men and their falling out is understandable and yet they didn’t seem to actually spend all that much time getting to know each other and building up to a relationship for romance but definitely a great working partnership. Both characters were likeable and I definitely wanted to see them succeed romantically and career wise. I received this book as an ARC and provided an honest review
