Author review. I really enjoyed Ngaio Marsh's books. Inspector Alleyn is a great character, one of my favourite detectives whom I first encountered in the TV series. My father loved the series and bought the books. He enjoyed them so I read them after he passed away. Marsh is a good writer. Her plots are well crafted mysteries. They can occasionally have slightly daft solutions which I don't mind as I find these books are enjoyable to read. Marsh primarily wrote alleyn books and they are best enjoyed in publication order. Unusually for books like these the characters age. Alleyn meets a woman, gets married has children. His wife, troy is another great character. So these novels are best read in order. The stories are generally police procedurals. A crime is committed, alleyn is called in, his team arrive and begin an investigation. The murder can sometimes take a while but I like her writing and marsh has a good grasp of character which helps set the scene in the books well. Alleyn joins the war effort in several books before returning to England and the familiar style of the earlier books. The police team are written well and several members go through the ranks during the books. There are 33 novels, including one completed long after her death by stella Duffy, one autobiography and a short story collection. The original 32 novels were reprinted in 11 omnibus editions which featured one short story from the collection as a bonus in each collection and included the autobiography in volume 11. These are good, fun mysteries with a great detective. Marsh is one of the great golden age authors.
