Obsessions, Stalking, Drugs, Affairs and Murder what more could you need in a book. This book you keep on the edge of your seat! I LOVED it

Reading about marriage/thrillers is my speciality, I just reading about what goes on behind a marriage. I couldn't take my eyes of the pages from these characters that all had husband and wife secrets. Obsession is a dark, twisting thriller. A must buy - must read. Carly Burton is a loving nurse, wife and mother. After one evening when Carly asks her husband Rob who else would you go for, if you could. When he answers Jenni this simple little game destroys Carly's life. Rob is a religious man who is a doctor that has patients pulling him into a busy routine at his surgery in Stanfield. Jenni Rossiter who works at the surgery has a religious fixation going to church, praying every morning and every evening. A web of betrayal is about to explode. Jenni's husband Craig and Carly start having just a pure sexual affair. When Jenni finds out about her husband Craig and Carly having a sexual affair together for her this is totally unforgivable in her eyes and demands a divorce. Carly Suspects that Rob is having an affair with Jenni. Carly Burton is suffering from an illness that is very complicated with depression, low self-esteem, alcoholism mixed with paranoia and sex addiction. Craig and Jenni move to Cornwall to have a fresh start at their marriage, but Craig falls in love with another woman. Crazy things start happening through out this brilliant story and things start to go horribly wrong. I very strongly recommend reading Obsession by Amanda Robson.

A throw away remark can make all the difference. A different take on a jealous reaction to a remark. This psychological thriller is tense and will keep you guessing. I thought I had it figured out and then it twisted again. At times it felt a little long and I did feel parts could have been condensed but overall a good read through out.

Rob and Carly have a perfect life with their children. Rob a GP, is popular in the surgery where he works and Carly his wife loves her job as a practice nurse in the same surgery. They are happy and share good times with their friends Jenni and Craig and their children. While on a camping holiday in the south of Brittany, Carly and Rob are enjoying a drink outside their tent while their children sleep within. Carly is a little drunk or more than a little drunk when she teases Rob and asks him " Who else would you go for, if you could ?" Rob tells Carly no-one but she pushes and pushes for an answer. Rob holds steady but Carly pushes further saying its just a game. In order to shut Carly up Rob say's " I quite like Jenni " Carly cannot believe what she has just heard - Jenni their friend ! This is a turning point in their marriage and Carly begins to imagine things. She doubts everything and doubts Rob. She looks at Jenni differently and looks at Craig, Jenni's husband differently. She becomes obsessed ! There are lies and tears and twists and turns in this novel. I thought the story started at quite a good pace and then fell flat and was slow and uninteresting, before it picked up slightly. There is a religious theme throughout this book with sexual addiction and mental health issues also associated with the characters. I though the characters were quite uninteresting and underdeveloped. Quite a disappointing read.

I’m genuinely in two minds about this book. It is an easy and enjoyable read, just right for summer holiday reading. Written in short chapters and in the voices of 4 different characters, the plot is one that follows the inter-relationship between two couples, Carly and Rob and Jenni and Craig. Leading happy and fulfilled lives, the story revolves around what happens when Carly asks Rob who he would be with if it were not her. That one question, and Rob’s reluctant answer, sparks a spiral into unhappiness, infidelity and destructive behaviour. Robson uses a nice plot device of leading from one character to the next through a linking of events so that the reader can see a different perspective to the one just offered. The difficulty I had is that not one of these people is innately empathetic or likeable. Rather they are extremely self -obsessed, selfish and altogether very irritating. The men are weak and the women live only to please them. Two of the characters are religious and I could not work out whether this was the author showing us how hypocritical their actions are, or just using this as a device to draw two characters closer together. I was also somewhat dismayed by the portrayal of mental health issues, which was both unrealistic and unhelpful. Nevertheless, there is something hypnotic about watching such a horrible drama play out in front of you, knowing that the characters are unable to stop the destructive path that they are following. Obsession is an interesting, somewhat addictive, well paced debut novel which shows great promise. Good summer reading.
