“Brilliant”
(Hardback)
by Barbie Dunford
I so looked forward to the release of this novel and had to treat myself before the release of the paperback - and I am SO glad I did. The eighth novel in the series and they simply keep getting better and better. Roy Grace is so amazing, his policing skills are never ending. He is my super hero. And Gaia's too in the storyline. A superbly writen, absorbing novel which is packed with even more action than normal. Not only that, the underlying story of Roy's private life takes some amazing twists - I CAN'T wait for the next in the series!

Peter James is always a good read. This is a classic of the genre.
“A thoroughly good read.”

Although very good this novel is not quite as brilliant as the previous books. It has all the hallmarks of a good detective novel: several plausible suspects, some great misdirection, red herrings and of course the damsel in distress in addition to the heroic cop saving the day, however, it lacks something. Or, rather it has too much of something and I think that is the unlike-ability of Gaia, she really is rather spoilt and I did not take to her at all, and therefore did not care what happened to her. On the other hand, I did want to find out who the stalker(s) were and what their respective motives were. Thankfully this aspect of the novel is superb. As all the various threads come together the reader is treated to some truly inspired and intricately plotted mayhem! One particularly fabulous twist (which I worked out!) and a few 'OMG' shocking moments are what makes Peter James' books worth reading. One of the genuinely inspired and possibly the funniest of the 'OMG' moments concerns Norman Potting and his love life - I combined a laugh out loud with a resounding 'Eeeew!' Genius, Mr James! Once more we delve into the background story of Sandy, who really is turning out to be deeply unpleasant, good riddance I say. I suspect there will much more of this side to Sandy in future novels. So, although very good, the lack of empathetic feeling evoked by the character of Gaia in this outing for Grace and co loses it half a star in my humble opinion.

Another excellent tale in the Roy Grace series. The usual tense plot, and snippets of Roy's (and his team's) personal lives. Sandy makes an unexpected appearance, and I expect she will feature in the not too distant future. Roll on the nest episode in the series !
