“I really enjoyed this!”

I haven't read any other Stephen Leather books so had no preconceived ideas of what this would be like. I am a big fan of John Connelly and this is comparable in style and content, albeit more darkly humorous. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading Midnight.

A very different, but excellent story from Stephen Leather. I have read a few books by Stephen Leather, so I had my expectations. Nightfall has a very different, but interesting storyline and great characters. It had many twists and turns too! A really good read!
“Good read”

I've read most of Stephen Leather's books. This one's very different but still an excellent story. Spooky - but not too spooky......I could read it in bed when no-one else was in the house!! I'm presuming this is going to be a series (or may already be) in which case I will definately catch anymore he writes with Jack Nightingale in.

This book was quite promising but failed to totally grab me for some reason. It’s the first Stephen Leather novel I’ve read so I’m not sure if it’s his writing or just a blip. I’ll definitely read the next in the series and probably pick up one of his more conventional thrillers to give his stories and writing a fair go. I haven’t read many thrillers with supernatural elements so it could be me struggling to gel the two genres together. Jack Nightingale is a pretty fascinating character. He’s an ex-police negotiator, now private investigator, who left the force after maybe, possibly, throwing a man out of a window. We don’t find out until quite late on what actually happened and even then not all questions are answered. It’s an interesting start because, on the one hand, you are cheering a guy who maybe threw an awful individual to his death but, on the other, you’re a bit uncomfortable on what may have been an abuse of power on Jack’s part. Then there’s Jenny, Jack’s assistant, who, despite being stonkingly rich, seems to enjoy what she does. It’s the characterisation of these two that keep me reading and stopped me from putting the book down. The dialogue between them is amusing and probably the best thing about the book. The story, though, just fell flat for me. I’ve read a lot of horror and thrillers in my time and this merging of both did nothing new with either. It plods along just going nowhere. There’s not even much action in the story, which I’d expect from a thriller, or much detective work, which I’d expect considering the main character is a PI. It seemed to me that the only thing that kept the story moving forward was with someone dying mysteriously every few chapters. And a lot of people died. So, a pretty average read that passed the time rather than something brilliant.
