The Night Lunch cart rolls down the city street, it’s dusk and dark. The Night Lunch bell rings and all the nocturnal animals come to feast, Fox has a pie, Badger wants a sandwich. Mouse cannot afford the Lunch Cart as he is a poor street sweeper, he watches the customers hoping a crumb may drop for him. As the evening shift reaches the end, Owl spots the despondent mouse. Has Mouse found an opening to the Lunch Cart or is Mouse the final meal. A dreamlike picture book that lulls you gently into the story. I adored the illustrations of dusky Victorian London as the animals await the dazzling cart. Each page was beautifully illustrated with the animals’ emotions jumping off the page – the joy of the food, the longing to taste – all beautifully realised. The words are simple and delicate and with the illustrations you feel like you’ve stepped into a world of magic and wonder. A great story of kindness, companionship, and gratitude and I was completely in its thrall. A picture book that will delight adult readers as well as children. I absolutely loved it and hope these authors work together again very soon. One of my favourite picture books of the year already.
