‘Never Was’ is a fantastic experience of a book, exploring gender, grief, addiction and masculinity. It’s confusing in the best possible way. I loved the way that H. Gareth Gavin played with formatting throughout the novel to communicate to the reader. The moments that really dived into the trans experiance were some of the strongest passages in a novel discussing this in recent memory.
