A real insight to the current prison system and how a young female prison officer can work professionally against the odds ..

From a v mature ex prison officer this author has got the ups and downs of the service !! Well done .. it’s hard for people to judge not ever stepping inside a prison to understand what happens day to day , a little look behind the gate .

A really interesting and easy read, written in a nice informal and chatty style, almost like hearing work stories from a friend. However it seemed to come from an immature individuals perspective. I know it was written by a young woman who was only 22 at the time of being a prison officer, at one point she says how another officer disagreed with her so she told them to “fuck off” and walked away. I don’t know how the author will feel about this book in years to come. Despite that it is a very interesting read and a real look in the inside of prisons with some heartbreaking on anecdotes about the self harm violence that occurs in our prison system and how people are just expected to cope in awful conditions. Things such as only having one sausage a few hashbrowns and a spoonful of beans and that being a supposedly nutritious meal for a fully grown man. I don’t know what that answers are to make the prison service better but I do feel like I have a better understanding of how bad it is which I appreciate. I think it would be interesting to read a book from someone who’s worked in the prison service for a long period of time and is older, I wonder how their opinion will be different from that of Marie Moss.
