Reviews: Never Greener (22)
“Loved it!”
(Hardback)
What a story. Beautifully written.
This us up there in my top 10 favourite books of all time I must say.
The thrill, excitement and the rollercoaster of emotions. It all felt so real.
Absolutely loved every single moment of reading this, really didn’t want it to finish. Couldn’t put this book down.
“Gripping but not quite ‘feel good’”
(Paperback)
I read above that ‘never greener’ was a feel good which I don’t think I’d agree with-The first quarter I wasn’t really into it and doubted if it was for me but I soon found it unpredictable and gripping. It would make very good television and Ruth’s style of writing is in a league of its own. I usually reach for the same sort of chick-lit but I’m very glad I opted for something different in this thought provoking and gripping read.
“Will they or won't they?”
(Hardback)
I'm guessing the fact that I didn't like Kate or Callum, (though I liked Callum more than Kate) is a testament to good writing as they felt very real to me. So much so I was almost screaming at the pages "Dont do it." There is lots of humour courtesy of Hetty and much heartache for Matt and Belinda. It is very well written and as a debut novel extremely believable.
“Never Greener by Ruth Jones”
(Paperback)
Never Greener by Ruth Jones is her debut book as an author and it is about relationships, past and present.
Belinda and Callum are happily married and Belinda is expecting their third child. When Callum meets Kate whilst working in his brother’s pub, they have a mad passionate affair and Callum risks his marriage to continue with this, even after Belinda has her daughter. Callum ends up staying in Edinburgh with his family and Kate is left heartbroken.
The two meet up again seventeen years later and the two of them start up their relationship again. Kate is now a successful actress marred to Matt and has a daughter. This time both marriages are ended and Callum and Kate move to London as a couple.
Will it work out this time or is it too late for them both?
I listened to this via Audible and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story.
Highly recommended
“All the charm and wit of Ruth Jones wrapped in a novel!”
(Hardback)
Well if this isn’t the novel to make you smile, I don’t know what is! As cheery and funny as the lady herself, the charm and wit come through on each and every page and this was a chuckle a minute, a laugh out loud book AND a tearjerker all at once. It just made me feel good and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I read it. Why do we think the grass is greener and what happens if we do or don’t take that step over the fence as it were?
As you might expect from Ruth’s TV work, the level of attention to detail here with her characters is brilliant. There’s warmth, wit, charm, regret, sadness…every emotion going and because of that tugs on your heartstrings in more ways than one. Would the spark of your first love still be there some 17 years later and how could things worked out when your lives have gone in such different directions? Aah it hits you this novel, right in the heart! Ruth Jones has that ability to take a simple question and wrap it up in more layers than a towering pile of Welsh rarebit. Just as yummy and you ‘ll need some tissues to cope with the fall out of both!
I’ve just watched the clip of Would I Lie To You where Ruth says she might have let a dog lick Rob Brydon’s sandwiches at a party and might have had her tortoise rescued moments before it went in the recycling crusher. Even when she’s being herself, she’s funny and self effacing and this novel is her in book form.
I miss Kate and Callum already! Book two please!
