Reviews: Nerd Do Well (4)
“Best gift for a Pegg fan”
(Hardback)
I bought this book as a Christmas present for my boyfriend. He absolutely adores Simon Pegg and thinks he'd be a fantastic guy to have a pint with. So, obviously, I gained the title of the Best Girlfriend of the Year when he unravelled the package containing this book. Now he is like a girl with a crush when he reads the book - he laughs at his jokes, goes 'awwww' to his stories and sleeps with the book next to him. I would be jealous but I just can't wait until he is finished so I could read it too! From the noises my boyfriend makes, this is the best book ever for a man who is interested in all things Pegg.
“Nerd Do Well”
(Paperback)
As a bit of a (huge) geek myself I was extremely excited to be settling down to read about Pegg's rise to supergeek and I must say I was not disappointed. Yes he maintains his distance and discretion about many things, particularly his personal life, but it is his work that is the important thing, and this he does not shy away from. We get to discover his first forays into the world of fantasy and the effect that the Star Wars films had on him and of course the original and on-going influences of a zombie film or two. Pegg is surprisingly candid at times (while maintaining the anonymity of those discussed) but only when it is necessary and relevant to his geek status, which makes a refreshing change to the usual bare all biographies that tend to crowd the bookstore shelves. In addition to the geekarama provided by Pegg's meetings with the great and good of the fantasy/sci-fi film world we are treated to snippets of his own superhero story, strangely also called Simon Pegg, and his faithful robotic man-servant Canterbury. Overall this is a great book that will appeal to the geek in all of us (whether you want to admit its there or not) and shows Pegg for the down-to-earth geeky guy he is, and I love him all the more for it (geek alert!!).
“One for the geeks”
(Paperback)
Funny, heartwarming and very very geeky. This is a wonderful insight into what made Mr Pegg the geek king he is today. Very good.
“Hard going but worth it”
(Hardback)
Firstly I have to admit to being a huge Simon Pegg fan so I went into this book with very high expectations... I mean the man is like a shining beacon to all us nerdy types!
However, I was slightly disappointed. I appreciate it must be hard to write about your personal life, and I understand how easy it is to get caught up in the language of all things film... Although my own attempts at including intertextuality within film in everyday conversation fell flat on it's face... This is how it seems within the book. Drop the pretentious language - it felt like I was back at Uni, not trying to read about the experiences of one of my favourite actors. It's not the type of book you can read at leisure... You have to pay full attention and concentrate completely - which is fine if you have the time and no distractions around you.
I also felt the end of the book was slightly rushed, which was a shame, as for me personally this would have been what I was most interested in - Spaced onwards and upwards....
I would still recommend it for all Pegg fans though... It'll at least boost your vocabulary!!!
