Nash Falls (Walter Nash #1) by David Baldacci Walter Nash really does seem like a good guy. He's totally into his work, is very good at it, can be single minded about it, but he's a good guy. He loves his wife and daughter and would do anything for them although he will admit he's not really close to either of them and accepts that it is because he's so absorbed in his work. But he is generous, kind hearted, and faithful. Life is good, they live a happy, wealthy life. Sure, he does have to say no to his daughter's unreasonable business plan which has her wanting to start at the top with little to no effort. Dads have to be dads and draw the line somewhere. She'll get over the disappointment and it's a good learning lesson. Saying no to his daughter does put him on the wrong side of his wife, though. When the FBI knocks at Nash's door, actually shows up after his father's funeral, it's the beginning of the end for Nash. They ask, actually, they demand the impossible. To not do what they say will mean sure death, to do what they say could mean death or at best, the lives of Nash and his family will be demolished and they will be living in poverty. Nash has done nothing wrong and that's not just him saying so, he really has done nothing wrong but powers much stronger than he is are going to use him for their means and then throw him away like worthless trash. The story set my anxiety on high and never let up. I can't think of anything that Nash could do differently and know I could do none of what he does do as well as he does it. We get to watch intelligent, wiry but scrawny Nash turn into something else entirely with the help of those who know what they are doing. This is a wealthy not so common man turned into something unimaginable and it's all for the love of his wife and daughter. You know how people wish they could go back and spend more time with their family when they had the chance to do so? Nash is living those thoughts and he's at least doing something rather than just moping about all that is lost or going to be lost. Full of action, full of paths to choose (although choices one would want to choose are nonexistent), Nash's chances seem impossible. And be aware that this is a cliffhanger of a story, we'll have to wait for book #2 for more although I didn't feel let down when I realized the story wasn't over. You’re supposed to know your subject and I was disappointed. Well, for some reason I thought I'd try Baldacci again. I picked the perfect book. Good story lines, excellent characters, good pace, and plenty of intrigue. None are original, all have beenn written about many times before, but this weaving of Nash's tapestry was well done.
