“A Spanish classic that deserves to be widely read”
(Paperback)
The best Gothic novel you've probably never read because it was only translated into English in 2007, over 70 years after being published. Arriving in post-war Barcelona to study at university, Andrea's hopes are crushed when she finds her maternal relatives impoverished and traumatised by the recent conflict. Although she finds some relief in her friendship with fellow student, Ena, Andrea is still oppressed by her relatives' aggression and secrets, unable to discover what really happened between her aunt Gloria and uncle Román or why Ena seems to find Román so intriguing. The story plunges towards a tense and emotional climax with the reader hoping against hope that Andrea will be able to escape her relatives and find some kind of happiness. For those who enjoy Gothic stories such as Jane Eyre and The Woman In White.
