Reviews: Murder at the Wedding (2)
“cosy crime at its finest”
(Paperback)
by Andy wormald
Book six in the highly acclaimed cosy crime series featuring Maisie Cooper, in fact one of the best cosy crime series i’ve read This is a read which is wonderfully character driven, it shows how you can build a deeply suspenseful and tension fuelled plot around the actions of the characters, it’s a masterclass in scene setting and in constructing a crime novel This is a book where the storytelling shines throughout on the page The way that the author creates his characters but then makes the reader care for them, they become part of the family. There is a definite touch of the Agatha Christies about the books but not in that golden age way, a modern take Having grown up in the 70s for me having the books set in this period is like taking a trip back in time, the author totally captures the feeling for the times and the period The way the plot plays on the previous books building it’s own story around them was quite interesting, it brings into play an array of would be suspects Throughout the book I was never quite certain which direction I was going to be taken or how it would all play out, that just added to the reading pleasure, the author has that ability to throw in red herrings when you don’t even know they are there, I love the way the book twists and turns. The way book has an element of doubt, mixed with a degree of intrigue, made a compelling and engaging read. From the opening pages I was drawn in The whole series has been a joy to read, one the pleasures of reading crime fiction is having the ability to read the hardest hitting and gruesome thrillers to the softer cosier side, for me Greg Mosse is one of the best at the more genteel side. A book and a series I have no hesitation in recomending
“Chocolate box crime”
(Paperback)
by Jo-anne Atkinson
After solving a series of murders, Maisie Cooper is looking forward to her upcoming wedding. Her fiance, Jack, has been on a posting to Newcastle and is only returning a week before the big day. However, Maisie is distracted from her plans as it appears someone is threatening her and Jack. As they run through a list of potential suspects, Maisie is supported by friends in the village and beyond. I haven't read one of these books before and therefore found it really hard to get into this one as it is so reliant on characters from the previous novels. That's probably why it didn't really engage me. Having said that I loved the 1970s setting with all the references to decimalisation etc.
