Reviews: Munichs (2)
“06/02/58”
(Hardback)
David Peace’s third football novel, Munichs, is the story of the 1958 Munich Air Crash. Weaving stories and perspectives throughout, players, staff, journalists, the survivors and the dead, this is a brilliant book. It was a turning point for the club, the sport, the city- the oldest characters in the story experienced both wars, younger faces would go on to see the sporting glories of 1966 and 1968. Epic and important and captivating
“Disappointing”
(Paperback)
Lots of positive reviews by others, but I found this a very disappointing read. It describes itself as a novel, but there's very little crafting of a narrative, just a throwing together of fragmented streams of consciousness (real or imagined) from various participants, bits of old match reports. little or no new information or insights. Overall, it just reads like sloppy journalism. I found myself skipping ahead to see if there were any hidden nuggets. There weren't.
