Reviews: Mudlarking (23)
“A joy”
(Hardback)
Initially I was concerned that this book was without illustration. How was I to understand what items looked like without pictures??? How wrong I was. Lara's prose is detailed and poetic. I could imagine every last detail of the treasure she found on the banks of the river Thames. This is a history of the river told through the people who have lived alongside it in the last 1000 years. It is inspirational and an utter joy to read and re-read. I highly recommend it. Many thanks to the publishers for sending me a copy to review. Now I think a visit to London is required!
“Wish I was there!”
(Hardback)
Wish I was there with Lara, standing or kneeling in the oozing mud of the Thames looking for finds. A fascinating insight into mudlarking with entertaining stories around the objects that she's found. If you like beachcombing, you will love this book.
“Liquid history”
(Paperback)
Just finished this book. Fantastic read! As a teenager I spent some happy weekends fossicking around an old Victorian rubbish dump in Bridgwater, Somerset and like the author was lucky enough to find many cobalt blue poison bottles (cobalt blue still my favourite colour) and Codd bottles. I now live in North Wales by the seashore so beachcombing and nature photography are my thing. As a crossword compiler, also fascinated by the provenance of many of the words and idioms the author digs up (such as Codswallop). Thanks Lara for your liquid history!
“Delightful journey down the river”
(Paperback)
I adored this book. Found the objects discovered fascinating and the port key storytellling accompanying them quite mesmerising. Mostly I found the journey along the river and back though time a delightful escape from the troubles of now. I’m filled with admiration for Lara - sifting through the mud muck and antisocial behaviour of today to find the treasures of the past. Bravo Lara, so glad you wrote this book.
“Fabulous Read”
(Paperback)
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s so interesting
