Reviews: Morvern Callar (1)
“A Wonderful Bonus”
(Paperback)
There have been many, many good reviews about the book itself. It is, truly, a wonderful book.
This review is about the bonus contained in this edition - an afterward written by the author 20 years after the book was published. Often authors leave us to surmise the reasoning and the outcomes of many of the sub plots that make up the storyline. In the case of Morvern Callar I felt that my assumptions were in line with the author's intentions. The afterward not only rubberstamped my thoughts but also added further richness and depth to these parts of the story.
Mr Warner then goes on to explain why he wrote this from the perspective of Morvern, rather than that of the boyfriend or Red Hanna with which he would have had much more personal experience. The enlightening answer to this just adds to the rich layering of the end result, presenting the reader a broader pallet to review and remember this story.
DO NOT spoil the main feature by reading the afterward first. Read the book knowing that, when finished, there is still a wonderful postscript to elevate the experience and to extend your thought process well after the covers have been closed.
