Reviews: More Than This (14)
“A very special novel - not just for teenangers”
(Paperback)
This is possibly my favourite novel from 2013, which isn't something I would say lightly.
Having never read any Patrick Ness before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I fell in love with this wonderful and evocative story. This is not just a novel for teenagers, with a plot spanning possible dystopian elements, classic sci-fi, and just good old fashioned storytelling.
Ness has created something beautiful here, and I hope that everybody gives it a chance.
“Original and compelling”
(Paperback)
This book is awesome; Beautifully written, wonderfully inventive and thought-provoking and completely captivating. It was structured really well; I enjoyed finding out more about Seth's character as the book progressed through the flashbacks he encounters. For a book told in third person, I still felt incredibly close to the character and the situation he was in; Patrick's descriptions of what Seth was thinking, feeling and seeing were brilliant. As the story develops it becomes more and more enticing, yet as a reader I still didn't have any clue where exactly it was going or how it would end - sometimes that can be frustrating but in this case it just made me want to read more, I was desperate to know what would happen! It's such an original book, and the synopsis on the back is deliberately vague so as not to give away any key plot points so all I'll say is it's fantastic!
“Intriguing and Mind-boggling.”
(Paperback)
This book was amazing. Really addresses the philisophical questions about where we go after death, and if there is more after this life. I really enjoyed the flash-backsin this books which helped piece everything together. Well paced and interesting all the way through, and the end really leaves you wondering.
“This was more that this!”
(Paperback)
I will start of by saying that this book was great and has been out on my really enjoyed it shelf (its hard to get on that shelf..!). I quite enjoy a good young adult fiction once in a while, so this was perfect for me. It was thrilling and had great character development which I feel really helped you get to know the characters. It was also unusual because I hadn't read anything like this story line before, which don't get me wrong that makes it an awesome book!
Really enjoyed it, I would recommend this to everyone who fancies something different to read or just likes a good young adult fiction book! Thank you Patrick Ness.
“Incredible Dystopian Fiction; For Teens and Adults Alike”
(Paperback)
Perhaps my favourite book of all time, More Than This takes normal teen identity struggles and places them into a dystopian other-world, unlike anything I've read before. While Seth figures out where he his, he also learns why he's there and more importantly: who he is. This book is absolutely heartbreaking, yet somehow uplifting and I would recommend to anyone; even if, like me, they don't 'do' science-fiction or dystopia. Seth is no hero, he's a real boy who's alone and lost and trying to figure things out. This is so empathetic, it doesn't matter where the book's set, or about the villains he's fighting; it's relatable and real for any audience. This book is the best I have found and I urge you to read it.
