Reviews: Mindwalker (3)
“Neon light, holograms, nanite injections: a futuristic delight!”
(Paperback)
Oh I LOVED this! It reminded me strongly of Marie Lu's work, especially Warcross, so if you loved those vibes then you'll definitely love this. I hadn't read a futuristic sci-fi in a while, and Mindwalker reminded me how much I like that setting!
1st person narrative is usually very hit and miss for me but I'm so glad to report that it worked so well here. Sil was a great character to follow: she was strong but vulnerable, she tried to keep people at bay while simultaneously letting them in, she believed herself selfish, while proving time and time again she was selfless. She was well fleshed out, layered, and most importantly, she felt real. The relationships, both romantic and platonic was excellent. I loved that Dylan not only showed us the bond between Sil and Ryder, but also the powerful platonic bond between her and Jondi, as well as Lena. Strong friendships can often be overshadowed in favour of showcasing romantic relationships, but I didn't find that to be the case here. Time and time again, Dylan impressed me with her character work. Their maturity and sense of awareness fit more of an adult audience, rather than YA, which in this case worked perfectly in their favour; the plot and environment naturally lending itself to a darker, more serious tone.
The writing flowed seamlessly, immediately immersing you into this high-tech futuristic world. Neon lights, holograms, nanite injections; Dylan's world-building was exquisite. Her writing reflected the intense, gritty environment, jumping quickly from scene to scene, raising the stakes higher and higher. And despite this, she still takes the time to carefully draw out more vulnerable and soft moments. The plot-twists and reveals kept me guessing at every turn, taking on a cinematic feel as you rush forward and watch everything unfold before you.
Can't wait for Mindbreaker!
“An absolute delight of a rollercoaster”
(Paperback)
There is only one thing I can say about Mindwalker - PHENOMENAL. Loved it all the way through. What a thrill! Cannot wait for the next part of the adventure in the Mindwalker universe!
“Scifi dystopia for fans of Marvel and Ready Player One”
(Paperback)
Mindwalker is a fun and action-packed scifi adventure, filled with emotional turns and intriguing worldbuilding, and incredibly high stakes. Great for fans of techno dystopia and cyberpunk, with questions of free will and capitalistic structure. Sil makes for a brilliant protagonist, with a voice that puts a unique twist on the genre in her active contribution to the status quo, and the lengths to which she has to go to unlearn her indoctrination.
