The art in this book is absolutely spectacular. Every page is a total treasure - my personal favourite was the butterflies on the 'Forests of Flutter' pages. But not only is the art incredibly beautiful, but the writing is very clearly expressed, thoughtful, poetic and considered, to create a great reading experience for every child (and for this adult!). What an absolute treat.

An absolute delight for both young and old, Migrations beautiful illustrations coupled with its simple but eloquent passages about migrating animals is perfect for inspiring any inquisitive mind. It will certainly be taking pride of place upon my bookshelf for all to see.

This is a beautiful book for children up to around eight or nine. Superb illustrations by Jenni Desmond convey the vastness of the world in which all manner of creatures travel thousands of miles every year. The book takes you along for the ride, appealing to the imagination first and foremost, but with interesting facts slotted in too. Chapters start, ‘Splash!’ or ‘Imagine’ or ‘Brrr!’ and are perfect for reading aloud to younger children. Mike Unwin has selected a wide range of migrating creatures including butterflies and bats, but I’m a little disappointed that polar bears are not featured, as their journeys have become so imperilled. (This fact could be sensitively handled for children.)

Some of the migrations in this book, such as that of the Monarch butterfly are mind boggling - the journey takes so long in terms of the creature's lifespan that the butterflies which reach the destination might be the great grandchildren of the butterflies which originally started the migration This is a great book for adults to read with young kids, or older kids to read on their own. The illustrations are amazing, filling every page, and the text is concise, lively and informative. There's also a map at the back to help you fully appreciate the vast distances which these creatures travel on their migrations, such as the Arctic tern, which flies from the North Pole to the South Pole every year. An amazing and beautiful book. .

What sets this book apart are the beautiful illustrations. The double page spreads are immersive, in a way that other reference books are not. It captures the imagination of children and adults alike as you are taken on a journey across the seas. The book chronicles 20 different migration stories with a sort of poetic tone. Perfect for a young and curious minds. It would be a lovely gift to read with little ones, or even for young teens, and I've no doubt it would be perfect as a classroom read! You can really see the passion that went into creating this book making it a charming must read.
